Enesys caught a Biggie Scabbard on Jig

Hello 2012, Hello Rainbow Runner!

Went out with Enesys after a last minute trip planning. Set off to Calubcob, Batangas for a quick trip to the usual fishing hole. Everything was set... good calm weather, cool breeze, and a bit cloudy. Jigged the fishing hole and then Nante gets a strike. BAM! He was using the heavy gears of Enesys, Ocea Jigger 4000P and Barefoot 400g rod. Bend was oh so lovely, then after a couple of cranks... the unexpected happened.

Fish dived and Nante was almost pulled overboard! He was positioned at the rear of the boat and the rod was bent like mad! I think I heard him curse since he was caught off-guard on how this one fought. He couldn't lift the rod anymore, then it darted to the left! Compensating, he immediately tried to fight the sudden change of direction and rod was still down since the fish was still peeling the line of the Ocea 4000P... then as quickly as it happened... the rod went straight. Pulled a ligament or almost dislocating Nante's shoulder in the process. Retrieved the line to see where it was cut and we were expecting a frayed Fluorocarbon leader but it was cut from the 65lbs Jerry Brown braid. Probably lost about 30m of braid on that beast. Nante's shoulder was injured and was not able to jig much anymore. He estimated that one at the 30+kg range.

After 5 hours of jigging we decided to head back to shore, so we trolled instead since Enesys and I needed some much needed sleep. He even said that we were gonna get a double strike. Then while trying to catch some Z's... my reel was screaming and the rod was jerking like crazy! Nante guns the engine to set the hook properly. Harvey handed me the rod and I fought what was at the other end of the line. Ok ok, it's been ages since I caught something while trolling with a Rapala so I tried to take it easy. Harvey was already retrieving his setup when suddenly... ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzttttttt! his rod too was jerking with the lovely sound of the reel clicker. Woohoooo "Double Strike" indeed! He tried to set the hook since the boat engine was already shut off, after a couple of cranks the fish was gone. Bugger!

So then I was fighting my fish and moved to the front of the boat. In my head a Spanish Mackarel and Wahoo was at the end of my lure... Counting the Metered braid to find out how much longer the line is out... 30m... 20m... 10m... in my head an image of a Wahoo was set. Then Nante said... Rainbow Runner! The image in my head suddenly changed to a Salmon (as to what they locally call it) gaffed and lifted to the boat. What a big Rainbow Runner, biggest I've seen with my own eyes. The lure was swallowed almost entirely... only a small portion of the head was visible.

Made another attempt to catch Enesys' fish but looks like they were not there anymore.

So we lost a big one, but it's those big ones that make us go back and try again someday. Sad that Nante was injured, so we told him to get lot's of rest and let the fish grow some more and we will be back and hopefully see what those fish are really made of.

Cheers everyone.

Wahoooooo!

Jigged Calubcob, Batangas today with Bibo and Ed Gatdula.

1st drop was done by Bibo and after a couple of strokes using his Saltiga 20 and JM Alien jig... he donated his jig to a toothy critter.

Ed got tired while jigging and switched to bottom fishing. Heavy style-fiberglass short rod, Avet MXL with 60lbs braid, got a big bite and fought for couple of mins but lost it after it managed to drag the 100lb Fluorocarbon leader to the rocks below.

We were about to move to another spot when I was bringing the jig up via long strokes. Got a hit and I managed to land my 1st Wahoo on jig.

Thanks to Bibo, Sir Ed, Nante and my Wifey.

3.5kgs Big Eye Trevally - Light Jigging

The usual suspects:
UU
Moleman
Reelin
Fishin_Ivy
Onin

My 2nd attempt on Night Jigging. 1st drop I was able to catch a Bigeye Trevally using my Pioneer Tuna Terror II rod, Shimano Biomaster 5000 with Surecatch 35g jig. I sure miss battling a fish on a Spinning Gear. Caught a couple of other species after a couple of tries.

2nd drop I caught a squid on the same setup, Nth drop... a small Red tail Galunggong. While the other boat UU and Moleman both caught Aswangs. Threw it back in the waters since they dont look happy when you take photos of Aswangs.

By 7:30am we were off to the Buoys of Laiya. On our 3rd payaw, I got a strike and landed a 4kgs Dorado. Next was Fishin_ivy's turn, was reminding her the basics of Dorado fishing when all of the sudden the line was yanked from her finger... gave a good couple of seconds before closing the bail and BOOM! Dorado Aerobatics! She landed her very first Dorado today which weighed in at 3kgs.

So now it's Onin's turn... when suddenly Roger's setup was screaming and the rod was on big bendo mode. Setup is a Daiwa Eliminator Rod, Shimano Spheros 6000FA. Mang Roger handed over the Rod to Onin and got the fight of his life. Took him a good 15 minutes I think to land that 5.5kgs Dorado. Mind you, the Dorado's these days fight like a train! They are really remarkable game fishes and this year was no exception... compared to last year, they are more agressive and fierce fighters this season.

By 10:30am we were already heading back to shore, and UU and Moleman's boat was behind us. Saw UU's haul and he was able to bring in 3 biggies. A 5.5kgs, 4.3kgs and a 4kgs. Moleman was able to land one as well. So no one went home today empty handed.

Fish: Bighead Carp (Imeldafish), 2.49kgs
Date of catch: October 17, 2010

Funny thing is... on my 3rd cast of the morning, I struck the Mango tree branch above me when I casted. The guys were all laughing, -Wow! Ang laki ng huli mong puno ng Mangga! Namely UU, Booger, Dongkiev and Moleman.

Took me a while to get it free, I almost fell in the pond trying to do so.

Got it free, casted, retreive... STRIKE!

Weeeee! After UU scooped it with the landing net...

guess who was laughing then? Hehehehe!

*Even won the Berkley Soft Plastic Competition for the month of October with this entry of mine. Received my prizes, an Abu Garcia Ultracast 2000 spinning reel and a Fenwick Eagle Rod.

Thanks to Berkley and Fishing Buddy.

Went jigging in Calubcob for a long awaited jigging spree with UU, Merlin, UU's friend Alex and yours truly.

Landed a 15kg+ Amberjack on my 5th drop. Victim was not able to pull much line, but I can really feel her might on my rod. Alex was able to land a 3kg+ Jack Trevally with my Pioneer Tuna Terror 2 rod, Tica Taurus 4500 reel with Surecatch 3E 150g jig.

Merlin also landed a good sized 2+kg grouper after we got our share. Later in the afternoon Alex got a massive strike that peeled all the line from the Tica Taurus 4500, even after adjusting the knob twice. Lost my lucky jig on that one.

Oh well, that's life. We said, hey Alex... next time don't join us anymore on our fishing trips... stick to Airsoft. You're making us look bad in jigging.

WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Joke only bro.

Congrats guys!
